The City of Middletown Water Department will commence the State mandated annual water main flushing program during the first week in April 2010. This multi-phased program will, depending upon weather conditions, last 12 to 14 weeks. Water main flushing is performed to eliminate unnecessary sediments such as iron and manganese from accumulating in the mains thereby reducing water quality. The flushing program will remove these sediments and help to clean the inside of the pipe. This improves water quality and helps to maintain the capacity of the water system to fight fires.
During the flushing water customers in close proximity to the flushing may notice dirty brown to red water and lower water pressure. If this happens try not to use hot water, as these sediments will settle in your hot water tank. You should refrain from drinking the water until it clears, as it will be neither aesthetically pleasing or good tasting. The water will clear in a short time. If you happen to doing laundry and you notice that your clothes have been stained do not let the clothes dry. Keep them wet and once the water clears rewash them using 4 once of cream of tartar.
